The timer starts on your first keystroke and stops on the last character, so your WPM reflects exactly how long the words took you.
Frequently asked questions
How long should 10 words take to type?
At an average 40 WPM, 10 words take about 15 seconds. At 70 WPM, about 9 seconds.
How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts every 5 correctly typed characters, including spaces, as one word, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct, so mistakes still count even if you fix them.
Is WPMTrack free and private?
Yes. Every test, lesson and certificate is free with no account. Your results and history are stored only in this browser and are never uploaded.
What does consistency mean?
Consistency measures how steady your speed was from second to second. 100% means you typed at exactly the same pace the whole time; lower numbers mean bursts and pauses.
