Keep your index finger on 4, middle on 5 and ring finger on 6, with your thumb on 0. If you are new to the keypad, try the 10-key home row lesson first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good 10-key speed?
Entry level roles often ask for 8,000 KPH; experienced accounting clerks and data entry operators typically reach 10,000 to 12,000 KPH with high accuracy.
Can I do this on a laptop without a number pad?
Yes, you can use the number row, but employers test on a keypad, so an inexpensive USB number pad is worth it for practice.
How is WPM calculated?
Words per minute counts every 5 correctly typed characters, including spaces, as one word, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every keystroke, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were correct, so mistakes still count even if you fix them.
Is WPMTrack free and private?
Yes. Every test, lesson and certificate is free with no account. Your results and history are stored only in this browser and are never uploaded.
What does consistency mean?
Consistency measures how steady your speed was from second to second. 100% means you typed at exactly the same pace the whole time; lower numbers mean bursts and pauses.
